On Tuesday 5 November 2024, United Against Malnutrition & Hunger (UAMH) hosted an event at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) on Hunger and Conflict: The Deadly Cycle.

Parliamentarians, think tanks, veterans and reservists, and representatives from civil society explored the key question: how can we break the deadly cycle of hunger and conflict?

This paper captures wisdom shared by the participants.

RUSI’s Director-General Dr Karin von Hippel opened the event which former Air Marshal Sir Graham Stacey, an Expert Adviser to UAMH, chaired. The panel comprised Donna Gavin, human security adviser to the British Army, Geraldine O’Callaghan, Director of the London office of the United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP), with former Chief of the Defence Staff, General The Lord Richards, giving keynote remarks.

We were delighted to be joined by cross-party Members of Parliament including Alex Ballinger MP, Tan Dhesi MP, Richard Foord MP, The Rt Hon Sir Julian Lewis, Monica Harding MP, Helen Maguire MP, Calum Miller MP, Steve Race MP, David Reed MP, Sam Rushworth MP and The Rt Hon Tom Tugendhat MP. Many have military backgrounds or expertise and drew on that experience to provide insights.

NGOs also provided valuable input, including Action Against Hunger UK, the International Committee of the Red Cross UK, Médecins Sans Frontières UK (MSF), Mercy Corps, Saferworld, Save the Children UK, The Coalition for Global Prosperity, UNICEF UK, and World Vision UK.

We are grateful for everyone’s contributions.
